Catholic vote may tip presidential contest

The Catholic vote is currently "divided about evenly" between Bush and Kerry, Jones said. Gallup released a poll showing that 50 percent of registered Catholic voters prefer Kerry and 48 percent prefer Bush.

The numbers are similar to Gallup's estimate of the Catholic vote in 2000, when Catholics supported Democrat Al Gore by 52 percent to 46 percent.
